RELATE NORTH 2014 NORWAY

The third annual RELATE NORTH symposium was hosted by the Sami University College located in Kautokeino, northern Norway. The symposium theme focused on Art, Heritage and Identity discussing broadly the indigenous communities and sparsely populated regions of the Circumpolar North. Alongside the symposium joint exhibition was opened and collaborative student workshop Teach me something was arranged. Students from Norway, Finland and Iceland produced artworks that discussed the northern identity and heritage.

The Art, Heritage and Identity Exhibition was the third edition of an annual event, which aimed to promote Northern cultural diversity and heritage, and share contemporary and innovative practices and knowledge exchange, in the fields of art and design teaching, learning and research.

32 artists from 9 countries presented their paintings, photographs, installations, video and media-installations, graphics, and sculptures in the exhibition. The exhibition was built on a dialogue between contemporary art and Northern indigenous arts and crafts. The exhibition was a collaboration with the University of Lapland, the Sámi University Collegeand the UArctic Thematic Network, Indigenous Arts and Crafts.
