Arctic Art and Design Education Exhibition Showcased at International Design Week 2025 in Graz, Austria. The exhibition highlights the value of the arts and art education for the vitality of Arctic communities. It featured roll-ups, videos (accessible via QR codes), and books.
Hanna Heinonen, from the University of Lapland, together with Antti Heinonen presented the exhibition and produced the video presentations as part of their participation in Design Week.
The exhibition was produced by the project Community Art-Based Sustainability in the Arctic, funded by the University of the Arctic. The project is a collaboration between Arctic universities — the University of Lapland (Finland), Nord University (Norway), Umeå University (Sweden) — and the Association Siunissaq (Greenland).
The theme of the International Design Week was unCOMMON underground: finding and negotiating “common ground” while venturing into the undergrounds of social movements, hidden narratives, and emerging ethics. The event explored how design engages with the uncharted and the uncommon, offering an arena for resistance and peace-building.
The Design Week was held from May 9 to 16, 2025, and was organized by the Institute of Design & Communication, FH JOANNEUM, in Graz, Austria.
