About the theme of Art & Design
Chair: Timo Jokela, Finland
There is an increasing number of initiative projects and research pilots done in collaboration within the fields of art, design and social sciences. The concept of Arctic Sustainable Art and Design emphasised by University of the Arctic and the University of Lapland, offers interesting arena for discussion on current challenges, opportunities and results of the collaboration.
The Arctic art and design can be used to increase well-being in and the competitiveness of the Arctic areas. Understanding the Arctic circumstances, everyday life, northern cultures and internationality form a core for the Arctic art and design. The initiatives must be based on a deep knowledge of the Arctic environment, its unique conditions and human adaptation to these conditions. As its best, the Arctic art and design combine places, local agents and international networks to introduce and implement new kinds of collaborative methods across the Arctic area. Expertise of the Arctic art and design means the ability to recognize, analyze, and solve challenging and even wicked problems in the contemporary society and environment. Furthermore the principles of sustainability must be followed. This expertise of the Arctic art and design can be applied within other similar conditions outside the Arctic area.
