Our Arctic Course was arranged in the University of Lapland and brought together university students from around the Circumpolar North, mainly from Finland, Norway and Iceland. The aim of the course was to make local children and youth voices heard about what they think life is in the Arctic. The course took place in March 2017, mainly in Rovaniemi and ONLINE.

The course was divided into four teams and their task was to arrange a art workshop with three schools in Rovaniemi and Onøy/Lorøy Norway. One team travelled to Hetta in northern Finland and worked with a village community there.

During the workshops, video artworks were created to be presented in an exhibition in the international Arctic Spirit Congress, arranged in Rovaniemi November 2017.

The teachers of the course were Annamari
Manninen, Elina Härkönen, Mette Gårdvik, Karin Stoll and Wenche Sørmo, and in Nesna Herminia Din.

Moira Kalomoira collected their pupils thoughts about the Arctic to following:

“Arctic is winter jackets and sauna, it is snow and melting ice, it is ski shoes and scarves and woolen hats. Arctic is the sound of water and the cracking of the ice. It is the nature landscape and the hill of Korvatunturi. Our arctic is reindeers and wolves and grilling sausages. It is snowflakes, hockey skates and baton and sledges.
Arctic is snowman.
Arctic is the Finnish flag.
Finland is Arctic.
We are the Arctic.”
